Summer is here! The sun is out, the sky is blue, birds are chirping, and it’s time to truly live our best life. Summer is the season that makes you want to live carefree, and enjoy every day to its fullest. We’ve always been told to protect our skin during these months, as sun damage is very real, and detrimental to our skin. While it’s important to care for our skin, it’s just as important to care for our hair during the hot summer months. Keep reading to learn how to care for your hair this summer.

How does the sun damage hair?

The heat from the sun can damage the hair causing it to become dry, brittle, frizzy and stiff. The UV radiation can cause the hair pigmentation to decrease whether you’ve coloured it or not. Additionally, the sun can burn your scalp causing dryness, irritation and sunburns. And let’s not forget, that your hair naturally becomes greasy due to excessive sweat and heat.

Use hair products that have SPF

Our skin needs SPF and so does our hair! There are so many hair products on the market that have various levels of SPF to protect them from UV rays. From hair sprays, to dry shampoos and texturizing sprays, there are lots of options to choose from.

Change your shampoo & conditioner

The heat from the sun can cause your hair to become dull, dry and brittle. To help your hair retain moisture, use hydrating shampoos and conditions. Depending on where you live, you may even find some shampoos that have SPF. If your hair is becoming increasingly dry, use hydrating hair treatments such as leave-in conditioners, oils, and serums! It’s recommended that during the summer months, you decrease how often you wash your hair to avoid stripping away your scalp's natural oils.

Avoid heat tools & try non-heat hairstyles

Allow your hair to air dry, and avoid using hot hair tools whenever possible. If you have big, frizzy hair that needs to be tamed, use the Aashi Beauty Beyond Blowout Brush. We’ve combined a hair dryer and straightener together, allowing you to dry and style your hair in one go!

Ditch the curling iron this summer and allow yourself to enjoy your natural hair! If you want to achieve that effortless beachy hair look, try putting your hair in a braid after washing it. For the best results, we recommend sleeping with this hairstyle. You could also wear your hair in a bun, ponytails, or different types of braids!

Protect your scalp

If you’ve ever had a sunburn, you know exactly how painful it can be. Wear a hat to protect your hair and scalp from sun damage. If you aren’t a fan of a hat, you can wear a silk scarf. The main thing here is to protect your scalp and hair from the sun, as much as possible.

Protect your hair from chlorine and saltwater

For those of you that enjoy swimming in the summer, it’s extremely important to care for your hair before and after exposure to chlorine. Before jumping into the pool, rinse your hair with cold water, and as soon as you jump out, rinse it again! You can also try using a leave-in conditioner while swimming as this will minimize the absorption of saltwater or chlorine.

There you have it! Above are 5 ways you can protect your hair and scalp from the summer heat this year. As with everything in life, it’s all about finding the right balance. Through trial and error, you’ll find hair products and styles that work for you, and will allow you to keep your hair healthy and happy. Have an amazing summer!
