What is the difference between Ceramic, Tourmaline and Titanium? - Aashi Beauty

Are you in the market for a new hair tool? With hundreds of products to choose from, it can be an overwhelming process. There are a lot of factors to consider such as price, brand, quality, and most importantly, what the hair tool is made of. For a large majority of hair tools, the material used to make them are known as ceramic, tourmaline and titanium. Not sure what the differences are between these three materials? Keep reading to find out.

Ceramic

The most common material used for hair tools is ceramic. The non-metal material disperses negative ions which aid in keeping your hair smooth, shiny and frizz-free by closing the hair follicles as it distributes heat evenly. The smooth surface also reduces tugging and hair-pulling. Ceramic hair tools are ideal for those with fine hair, damaged hair and chemically damaged hair. This material is preferred for those that are beginners and may not be as experienced, that being said, professionals use ceramic hair tools as it’s easy to use, and is less damaging to your hair. It’s also important to note that individuals with thicker & coarse hair can still use ceramic, however, it may be a slower process to achieve the results desired.

Pros:

Cons:

  • Gentle heating material
  • Produces negative ions that help keep hair smooth and shiny
  • Smooth surface to reduce tugging/pulling
  • Not as damaging
  • Great for beginners & professionals
  • May not be suitable for those with thick/coarse hair
  • Takes time to reach full heat temperature

Tourmaline

Tourmaline is a crystal mineral that is used to coat plates of hot tools. This material is often infused into ceramic materials for shiner and frizz-free results. Tourmaline locks in moisture keeping your hair shiny and is great for those with thicker hair.

Titanium

Titanium is a material that is preferred by most professionals, as it creates long-lasting curls. This material heats up quickly and can reach high temperatures. Similar to ceramic materials, the negative ions smooth hair follicles reducing frizz and increasing shine. Titanium is known to be more damaging to your hair, especially if you don’t use heat protection and are using it daily. This material is prone to cold spots and unexpected drops in temperature which could lead to uneven curls, resulting in re-curling the hair, which can be more damaging. Titanium is best for those that have thick, coarse and textured hair types.

Pros:

Cons:

  • Negative ions smooth hair and reduce frizz
  • Heats up quickly
  • Easy to use
  • Ideal for professionals or those experienced with styling hair
  • Damaging to hair
  • Cold spots and unexpected temperature drops

When shopping for hair tools, it’s important to ask yourself the following questions:
  1. How much time do you have to get ready in the morning?
If you are pressed for time, titanium may be a better option as it heats up quickly, compared to ceramic tools.
  2. Will you be styling your hair every day? Every other day? How often do you plan on using the hair tool?
If so, you may opt for ceramic as it’s gentler for your hair resulting in less damage both short term and long term!
  3. What is your hair type?
If you have finer, damaged or chemically treated hair ceramic tools would be better for your hair. If you have thick, coarse or textured hair then titanium would be a better option as it will heat your hair quicker and more efficiently.
  4. What is your budget?
Typically, ceramic can be more affordable compared to titanium.

Purchasing hair tools can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be! Ceramic, Tourmaline, and Titanium are the three most commonly used hair tool materials. Now that you know what the differences are between the three, you can make an informed decision with confidence. Happier hair days are ahead, beautiful!
